Buda is a great city to live or look for a house in located 15 miles South of Austin in Hays County, Texas. It has a population of around 16,449.
The city’s elevation is 702 feet and has a total area of 6.16 square miles.
The suburb of Buda hosts many events including a farmer’s market. You can also visit the city’s historic downtown area and learn about its interesting history. Buda started as a parcel of land owned by Mrs. Cornelia A. Trimble. In 1880, the International and Great Northern Railroad was expanded from Austin to San Antonio, which gave Mrs. Trimble’s land easier access to other areas and gave her the idea to plat the land as a full city.
In 1881, Buda was officially established under its old name Du Pre and its first land plots were sold.
When the Railroads eventually created a stop in Buda, the town got a post office, and people and businesses began to move there at a higher rate.
Six years after it was established, the USPS realized there was another town also named Du Pre that was named pre-1881, so Du Pre changed its name to Buda at that point in 1887. The name is thought to come from the Spanish word Viuda which means widow, and there were two widows who cooked at the Carrington Hotel, a popular restaurant for those traveling on the railroad.
Today Buda has grown into a vibrant city with many retail shops, services, restaurants and businesses.
